Interesting new wager at Churchill Downs

Those who view new wagering options with a jaundiced eye may not embrace the wager Churchill Downs has begun to test with on-track customers this week, a bundle win, exacta and trifecta package called, the matrix. It is, however, an interesting vehicle for exacta and trifecta players and also eliminates aggravation for those prone to being split in the gimmick after having neglected to place a bet on a fat-priced winner. You know who you are.

A $9 minimum bet allows three horses on one ticket and provides 15 combinations in three pools – win, exacta and trifecta. The wager is fractionalized -- 60 cents on each of the 15 bets. This replaces at Churchill Downs what may have been the most ill-conceived bet ever – over-under on the total of the saddlecloth numbers of the first two finishers, a proposition that was enthusiastically ignored by the players in Louisville. The matrix has a bit more going for it. --PM
