Put up, or shut up

Saratoga Springs, New York

The level of classless, distasteful ignorance of which Rick Dutrow, trainer of Big Brown and other prominent horses, is capable is astounding.

To wit:

“Curlin couldn't win the Derby, we could. Curlin couldn't win this race, we could. Curlin got beat [by] a filly. We haven't. Our horse is undefeated on the grass. Curlin isn't. I don't know why people think Curlin is such a good horse. We're way better than Curlin."

Curlin won the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Breeders’ Cup Classic and Dubai World Cup.

Big Brown hasn’t

Curlin finished second in a Grade 1 stakes to a top-class grass horse who won the Breeders’ Cup Turf and beat another multiple Grade 1 winner with a Breeders’ Cup Turf win on his resume. Big Brown won a maiden race on grass.

Curlin was Horse of the Year in 2007.

Big Brown is unlikely to be Horse of the Year in 2008.

And, Big Brown is not, “way better” than Curlin.

The race at Monmouth Park that I saw on Sunday failed to inspire the feeling that I was watching a potentially great horse. A good, determined horse, to be sure; the best of a substandard crop of three-year-olds, certainly -- but not a great horse.

Big Brown, in a drive for three furlongs and drifting out in the last (perhaps that pesky left-fore hoof was stinging him a bit; no one has had a good look at that since early June.), was all out to beat Coal Play, who has set a blistering pace and was understandable spent at that point. By no stretch of the imagination was this particularly impressive effort.

If Dutrow and the IEAH family are really confident that Big Brown is “way better” than Curlin, they have the opportunity to make the point. On Tuesday afternoon, we will be made aware of the decision on Curlin’s next start. Wherever it is, they can send Big Brown to that race, turf or dirt, and run against what is considered to be the best horse in the world.

Or …

Shut up!

It's about time someone said this. Big Brown isn't even the best 3 year old in the world (Henrythenavigator), much less in the same league as Curlin. Apparently, Dutrow didn't get enough humble pie after the Belmont. A matchup with Curlin in the Woodward should do the trick and hopefully shut him up once and for all.

I feel bad for the horse because he isn't a super horse; he's a slightly above average colt in a horrible year. His connections are such arrogant blowhards that it creates a lot of negativity toward the horse. I know I was really happy when the horse dnf (was well on his way to finishing last, anyway) in the Belmont; it finally shut those idiots up and put them in their place, but apparently that didn't last long.

The effort on Sunday was not good; he struggled to beat what basically amounts to a nice allowance horse. It was not an effort to brag about.

Why do you even waist one word trying to explain the inane ramblings of a drug-addicted cheater? He shamed his father, ten times a better trainer than his moronic son, and unfairly maligned good men such as Moschera and Contessa.

I rooted for Brownie yesterday because he does not deserve to be lumped into the same sack of coal as his trainer and Penny-Stock pushing owner.

This whole IEAH crew makes my skin crawl but Big Brown is better than them.

If they have one ounce of integrity, they will run against Curlin at any track. However, I hold out no hope that they will ever do the right thing.

Well written. I have had enough of Dutrow to last a long time. We all have noticed the dignity and respect the horse industry professionals have for one another except Dudu. I am amazed that I wonder how ignorant is he really, when I already know, but yet I cannot believe it. Will someone please put an end to this, please Mr. Ivarone?

I have had enough of Dutrow. He is so ignorant in so many ways that I am convinced he is a poor trainer unless his horses are on drugs.

Curlin has more class coming out of his rearend than Dudu has coming out of his mouth.

IEAH will never run BB at a NYRA facility because of the way NYRA won't bow to these cheats like the little tracks like Monmouth do. Who in addition to giving BB a million bucks to jog around the track, threw in another 50k ???? I bet there are plenty of other smaller tracks that will do the same.

OH yeah, and no detention barn over at Monmouth.

I find it hard to believe anyone can think Curlin can be beat on the dirt after seeing him win at Dubai this year.
